Over the Ice

VOLTAR AND LOSIA LOOKED at each other, worry etched on their faces.

Voltar wrapped an arm around Leona. ‘Let’s get back to the others. If anyone can help you, it will be Sheiline.’ Leona nodded. Losia gathered their weapons and the three headed out. Losia led the way up the narrow passageway, sending a small ball of light flickering in front of them.

It was still night when they emerged at the top. Leona moved like a sleepwalker, her mind far away. Voltar ushered her out of the cavern as quickly as he could.

‘Voltar!’ Leroy waited for them on the ledge and strode forward to help with Leona. ‘What’s wrong with her?’

Voltar shook his head, his lips thin. ‘We need Sheiline.’

‘The others aren’t far away. Come, follow me.’ Leroy led them down the giant steps and around a bend to a hollow with a few trees. Although they’d tried to sleep, the others had been waiting for them and were quick to jump up.

‘How did it go?’ asked Elodie.

‘Not entirely to plan,’ said Losia.

‘Sheiline?’

‘I’m here, Voltar.’

He ushered Leona to the healer. ‘She has lost her magic. Do you think you can find out why?’

‘Really?’ She took Leona’s hands in hers and tried to catch Leona’s gaze from under her hair. ‘Sweet Thing?’

‘It’s gone,’ Leona whispered, with tears streaming down her cheeks.

Sheiline looked back at Voltar. ‘What happened?’

He explained about the ring. Sheiline picked up Leona’s hand and touched the tattoo. She closed her eyes and sent healing powers into Leona. Leona’s crying turned to sobs. Sheiline lifted her head. ‘I am not strong enough, we must wait until my power is fully restored and try again.’

Elsa rushed forward and gathered Leona in her arms. ‘It’s OK. It will only be temporary, you wait. It will come back when it’s ready.’

‘Do you really think so?’

‘Oh yes, absolutely. In the meantime, come and lie down for a while and have a rest.’

Voltar mouthed a thank you at Elsa. She nodded in return and ushered Leona over to where she’d been lying. His mouth was dry. He was used to sparring with a fiery, strong warrior. Seeing Leona so vulnerable was tearing at his soul.

Losia went over and sat on the other side of Leona, when she noticed that Leona was shivering, Losia sent a slight wave of heat through a touch on her back.

Leona sighed and curled up in a ball. Losia kept her hand on Leona’s thigh while Elsa stroked her hair. ‘It’s alright. Everything is going to be alright.’

The other elves huddled in a circle.

‘What are we going to do?’ asked Alden. ‘She won’t be able to run in magic timing. It will take us days to get back to Gowennea and the forest.’

‘Should we split up?’ asked Elodie.

‘No,’ answered Voltar. ‘We stay together. If that dragon beast comes back, it will take all of us to defeat it now Leona has lost her power.’

‘I’ll not leave her side,’ said Connor.

Voltar gave him a brief smile and put his hand on the young elf’s shoulder.
